Modular wardrobe systems vs custom-built wardrobes

Modular systems come in fixed sizes. A custom-built wardrobe is made to your exact wall. Here is how to choose.

In short

A modular wardrobe system is made from standard-size units, usually in fixed widths and heights, that are combined to fill a wall. A custom-built wardrobe is designed and made to the exact width, height and layout of your room. In Singapore homes, custom built wardrobes usually fit better: they reach the 2,600mm HDB ceiling, close gaps at uneven walls and work around aircon trunking and sockets. Modular systems are quicker and can be cheaper upfront, but leave filler gaps and wasted space. Wardrobe SG only does full custom builds, from S$340 per foot run.

How modular and custom-built wardrobes compare

  • Fit

Modular units come in set widths, so gaps are closed with filler panels. A custom build is sized to the millimetre, wall to wall and floor to ceiling.

  • Storage

Custom builds use the full ceiling height, including a 450mm top compartment. Modular units often stop short, leaving a dust shelf on top.

  • Internal layout

Both let you choose hanging, shelves and drawers. A custom build lets you set the exact heights and widths for your clothes.

  • Cost and lifespan

Modular can cost less at first. A custom built wardrobe is a fixed part of the room and is built to last as long as you stay.
